Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

Keeping safety and cost-efficiency in mind, Dynamic Directional Boring uses Ground Penetrating Radar technology to detect objects beneath the surface, such as buried utility lines, electrical conduits, reinforcing steel and more. This is especially important when you are in the process of building a new structure or you are restoring an old building.

Failing to detect an unknown utility and ultimately damaging it during excavation could significantly impact your project’s timeline and budget. It could also impact your company’s reputation for simply not doing your due diligence.

How does GPR work?

First, the GPR system is made up of three main parts:

  • 1

    Control Unit

  • 2

    Antenna

    2

  • 3

    Power Supply

The control unit sets off the radar energy pulses that the antenna will send underground. It also holds the data collected with a built-in computer and hard disk.

The Ground Penetrating Radar uses radar pulses to get images of the subsurface. Electromagnetic radiation detects reflected signals from the structures underground. These signals are then sent to a receiver at the surface. Project Managers will collect and use this data to determine the object’s exact location.

GPR Benefits

  • Non-invasive – No digging required.
  • Environmentally-friendly – Frequency waves don’t damage the subsurface, environment or nearby people.
  • Quiet – The tool does not make any noise and therefore doesn’t disturb neighbors.
  • Durable – Long-lasting and built for endurance.

FAQ’s regarding Ground Penetrating Radar

Yes, it does not release any harmful radiation or other side effects.

GPR can detect objects underneath the ground, changes in material properties, voids, cracks and more.

This depends on the site conditions and which type of application you are interested in. For penetrating grass, asphalt or concrete, the antenna can penetrate up to eight feet. For concrete, the antenna can go about 18 to 24 inches.

GPR is incredibly accurate and makes it easy to find hidden objects underground.
